19th BRITISH OPEN TAI CHI CHAMPIONSHIPS & FESTIVAL OF CHINESE MARTIAL ARTS

Friday 27 April 2007 at 06:58 am A special attraction in Oxford this year was the visit and demonstrations of members of a Chinese delegation from Zhengzhou led by Mr. Li Wei, Secretary General of the Zhengzhou Wushu Association, who were the guests of the Tai Chi Union. Master Liu Yiming demonstrated a set of Chang's Boxing from Henan Province, which uses much Tai Chi theory though it is different posturally. Master Liu also demonstrated the rare Bagua Ji Zhua Axe form. Madam Li Fei also gave elegant performances of the rarely seen Bajiquan and Tongbeiquan.

Our Chinese friends after discussion with Tai Chi Union Chairman, Gary Wragg, awarded quality swords to the outstanding female, male and junior competitors. These were newcomer Goldie Webb, veteran tuishou competitor Michael Abosch and Joanna Ji who narrowly edged out her younger brother Johnny.

There were competitors from France, Denmark and our annual visitors from Belgium led by Geert Van Loo. The highlight of the full contact was a 3 man team challenge, a Chinese Boxing team from France against a team from Great Britain and Ireland, which our French friends won; Tai Chi man, Declan Gannon from Dublin, being our only winner. Thanks to all who came for making the day a success.

Tai Chi in the Park 24th June 2007

Tuesday 10 April 2007 at 2:41 pm Tai Chi (Taiji) in the Park on the last Sunday in June – 24th June 2007 at 14:30

Tai Chi Union for Great Britain is organising another day of Taijiquan to promote Taiji and other internal martial arts in the local community. Instructors, practitioners and friends will meet in various parks in Great Britain to enjoy a day of Tai Chi, just as it is traditionally done in China. Tai Chi Chuan, a Chinese martial art harmonising body mind and spirit, is becoming popular in this country as more people realise the health benefits it can bring. If you would like to have information, you can get in touch with the event organiser, Eva Koskuba on 0118 979 2556, eva@golem.demon.co.uk.

BTCC Championships

Friday 06 April 2007 at 6:10 pm

Chris from the tai ji circle sent us the first news of the 19th British Tai Chi Championships:
Six students from the Tai Ji Circle, based in London’s Camden, led by its director Shifu Quan Jun Liu, entered the 19th British Tai Chi Championships at the Blackbird Leisure Centre in Oxford, on 1 April. This was the second competition that our students have entered and they competed in several catagories, the Open Mens Tai Chi Hand Forms, Tai Chi Sword Forms and in the Beginners and Intermediate Hand Forms.

It was an exciting day with dazzling Wushu, (martial arts), demonstrations from the TCUGB’s (Tai Chi Union of Great Britain) visiting Chinese delegation from Zhengzhou, and lots of competitors demonstrating every style of tai chi, including the Chen Style. Congratulations to our students who overcame their nerves to compete and performed well despite heavy competition.

Paul Lockyer came 1st in the Open Tai Chi Mens Forms, winning a gold medal for the 56 Part Chen Competition Form, Martine Niven won gold for the 42 Part Sword Competition Form, in the Tai Chi Sword Forms , and Justin Schlosberg won Bronze in the Beginners category. Justin has only been training in the Chen Style with the Tai Ji Circle for just a year.

The students have been receiving early morning coaching from Shifu Liu and working very hard to achievethese great results.

hopefully we will have the rest of the results soon.
